The ancient wisdom of Peri-Steaming (Womb Healing)

Peri-steaming, also known as “Pelvic”, “Yoni” or “Vaginal” Steaming, is an ancient practice that has been used for centuries by female bodies all over the world. It is a practice of womanx health, wellness, and maintenance. Female-bodied reproductive organs, like any organs, are tied to overall well-being.

Our reproductive organs are not purely for creating babies, or for pleasure, but also hold the essential function of release, renewal and cleansing of the body through its detoxification processes. They can hold bad bacteria or good bacteria, much like our gut biome, and therefor create balance or imbalance.

To keep your pelvis healthy, as a female-bodied individual, is to honor your body and the inherent wisdom that lies within.

I asked one of our womb healers, Alicia, a bit more about the practice to get a deeper understanding of how female bodied individuals can support their wellness. Learn what Peri-steaming is, how it works, and what to expect in a womb healing session.

Meet Alicia-

I am Alicia Wang, I am a woman, a mother, a friend, a lover, a movement coach, a nature lover, a healer, and a peri steaming practitioner.  The V Spa® Academy Pelvic Steam Practitioner Course  exposed me to an extensive training on the historical significance of pelvic steaming and an incredibly qualified practitioner, Alyssa brought my womb space back to life in my heart and mind. This made me want to go through the course myself.

In your opinion and expertise, why is this practice beneficial?

Personally, steaming itself has shortened my bleeding days and I am no longer having black or brown blood. My blood is red start to finish, which is what we are all aiming for.

I also have designated time to stop my focus on all other things and tune in deeply to my womb and her wisdom and energy. I have time to ask her what she needs and receive.

From a practitioner standpoint there are a multitude of known benefits:

  • Reduction in pain, bloating and exhaustion associated with menstruation

  •  Decreases heavy menstrual flow

  • Regulation of irregular or absent menstrual cycles

  • More rapid healing and a toning of the reproductive system after giving birth

  • Eases discomfort of uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, uterine weakness, uterine prolapse & endometriosis

  • Promotes healing of vaginal tear, episiotomy, or C-section scar

  • Helps to restore bacterial and ph balance to aid in prevention of infections, bacterial vaginosis and odors

  • Relief for symptoms of menopause including dryness or pain

  • Can tighten the vaginal canal

  • Detoxification of the womb and body

Spiritual benefits:

  • Reconnect to the ancestral wisdom of the womb

  • Release of stored emotions & anxiety

  • Access to the feminine energy that gives rise to our vibrant radiance and creative potential as women

  • Relieves tension and creates a state of bliss

  • Helps with insomnia

  • Can help aid in healing from sexual trauma

What are some common reasons people choose to womb heal with you?

  • Reconnect with a forgotten part of their body

  • Release anger at the womb

  • Open up even more to the wisdom of the womb

  • Clear old energy

  • Regulate menstruation.

I feel that I have both felt and witnessed a deep connection with the womb and the wisdom of the womb and all that is feminine.

There is always delight present when we can sit with each other and talk openly about our vaginas, vulvas and overall pelvic, vaginal, sexual and creative health.

Each time I am a practitioner or receiving a womb healing/vaginal steam session I feel that I am connecting to the ancient wisdom in my womb reminding me that this was the way; women holding each other and mirroring for each other so that we can connect to ourselves on a deeper level.

How is womb healing/ peri steaming with a coach different than just doing it on your own?

The best parallel I can illustrate right now is that steaming on your own is like brushing your teeth.

Whereas womb healing/ peri steaming with a coach is like going to a dental hygienist for a deep cleaning.

What is your personal style as a womb healing practitioner?

For each session I like to arrive at the studio at least 30 minutes before our session. After I settle in, I smudge the space, light candles, make sure there is tea ready and hot water for the steam, set up thrown (with bolsters, silk and blankets) make sure there is water and extra wash cloths to clean up with.

Set up the Womb Room with my cards and a blessing poem.

I then take the time to center myself and tune into my own womb wisdom.

I set an intention for the session and then greet the client when they arrive. Our session begins with a welcome and check-in.

Then, I read from John Donahue's book To Bless the Space Between Us, and a card reading.

Then I walk the wise woman through a guided meditation where we tune in to her womb wisdom.

After the meditation, we move to the steaming room for a 25 min vaginal steam.

There are three herbs to choose from: gently, cleansing, and clearing.

The session ends with a somatic check in at the end and a discussion on how to integrate the wisdom that came up.

What are practices that you as a woman do yourself to support your womb?

  1. I track my cycle and tune into the different energies of each cycle (steaming during non bleeding phases at least once a week)

  2. I have started aligning my life with my cycle. In that, I have taken more down time when I am bleeding, truly leaning into the winter of this phase.

  3. I rarely use tampons or pads so that I can feel and be in tune with my blood leaving my womb.

Connecting with your womb can be very healing.

not only to be clearing out any stagnant mucus or build up, but also just witnessing that this is a part of our body and it doesn’t get attention often.
